The Less Creative Mind of Today's Youth

This article is about how children are becoming less creative and more narrow-minded. Researchers found that creativity has decreased among American children in recent years. From 1990 to present, children have become less able to produce unique ideas. Children are also less humorous and imaginative. Experts explain how creativity cannot be lost, but how it also needs to be nurtured. A reason for decreasing levels of creativity can be shown in school. "The current focus on testing in schools, and the idea that there is only one right answer to a question, may be hampering development of creativity among kids," said Ron Beghetto, an education psychologist at the University of Oregon. According to Beghetto, this situation can be fixed; a recent study found that during playtime, kids have actually become more imaginative. However, researchers are not sure whether children will apply their playtime imagination to the real world.

I chose this article because I found it interesting how us children and teens are not that creative. Since we are the future of society, we need to think logically but also creatively. If we cannot create new and exciting ideas to improve society, it can be detrimental to not only us but to following generations as well.
